NOTES ON DIFFERENT LIGHTING TECHNIQUES IN HORROR (1)
DIFFERENT LIGHTING TECHNIQUES
- Uplighting
- Silhouette
- Spotlighting
- Underexposure
- Harsh light (hard light, chiaroscuro)
- Prominent and projected shadows
- Shooting through objects (internal frames)
- Shooting through elements
These lighting techniques are important as they are all obscure or distort in reality in some way.
This helped us get a better understanding of lighting as we didn't realise how much there is to it. Lighting is key in mise en scene and making the whole thing believable and its more important in a genre like horror as its predominately low key to help build on the tension. We will be taking this a step further by looking into it more in our next two blogs.
